Methuen, MA – July 17, 2012 – Over a dozen athletes from Essex Rowing in Methuen will make the short trip to Boston this Sunday to compete against the world’s best in the C.R.A.S.H.-B. Sprints—a world-championship competition raced over 2,000 meters using indoor rowing machines.
The C.R.A.S.H.-B. Sprints was started in 1980, by a group of US Olympic and World’s Team athletes. Today the event attracts thousands of competitors worldwide. Using Concept II indoor rowing machines, athletes race across nearly 50 categories—including lightweight and heavyweight, able-bodied and adaptive, youth and adult events.
Headlining for Essex Rowing are local youth athletes Elyse Pengeroth and Michael Kapp. Kapp, a junior at Andover High School and fourth-year rower, is particularly strong on the indoor machines and will be seeking a top-5 finish. Last summer, Kapp earned a silver medal in the Under-17 Single at the Club National Championship and has been producing remarkable results all winter. If successful at C.R.A.S.H.-B., he will solidify his position as one of the top youth rowers in the country.
Pengeroth, a senior at Andover High School and reigning Club National Champion in the Women’s Junior A Pair event, is competing in at C.R.A.S.H.-B. for the third time. While her rowing achievements are largely due to her remarkable skills on the water, she is expecting to take a big step forward on the indoor rower at the event.
Other youth athletes competing for Essex this weekend are Gregory Rickenbacker and Matthew Norris of Andover, Brendan Dagher of Methuen, and Scott Lyon of Georgetown. There are also ten members of the Essex adult team racing, across various categories from Open (age 19-30) to Veteran (age 60-64).
The 2012 C.R.A.S.H.-B. Sprints will be held on Sunday, February 19 at Boston University’s Agganis Arena. Doors open at 7:00 a.m. with racing scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Admission is free to all spectators. For a race schedule and directions to the arena, go to www.crash-b.org.
