Karl Beck to Join Essex Rowing Coaching Staff

Karl Beck Methuen, MA – August 15, 2010 – Essex Rowing's Executive Officer, Travis Gardner, has announced that Karl Beck will join the coaching staff effective Friday, August 13. He will serve as first assistant to Senior Coach Mike Irwin and play an instrumental role in developing the club's emerging scholastic teams.

"I am really excited to join Essex Rowing in this stage of its development," said Beck. "The program has shown tremendous potential and has come a long way in a short period of time. There is still a lot of room for growth and I look forward to working closely with Travis and Mike to continue to develop the youth programs. I hope to be a valuable addition to an already strong team of coaches."

"I've known Karl as a colleague and competitor for two years now and am excited by the dynamic he will bring to our staff as the club enters its fourth year," said Gardner. "The organization continues to grow at a rapid pace. The development of our scholastic teams alongside the club program is an important part of our plan to ensure the quality of experience our athletes receive is maintained as we grow. Karl's responsibilities here will make him an important part of that process."

Beck comes to Essex with four years of coaching experience, serving most recently as Men's Assistant Coach at Community Rowing, Inc. Prior to joining CRI, Beck was the Men's Novice Coach as Wayland-Weston Rowing Association where he led his Men's Youth Novice Eight to a gold medal at the 2008 Northeast/Mid-Atlantic Junior District Championship.

Beck also serves as the Men's Open and Masters Sweep Coach at Riverside Boat Club in Cambridge, MA, a position he has held since the Summer of 2008. In that capacity Beck has led his crews to multiple top finishes in competitions like the Head of the Charles and the Masters National Championship, including a win at the Charles in the Club Men's Four in 2008. He will continue in this capacity through the Fall 2010 season before turning his full attention to Essex.

Beck graduated in 2004 from the University of New Hampshire, with a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Mathematics: Economics and lives in Somerville with his wife Molly.
