Essex Rowers Make A Splash In New York


Methuen, MA – April 25, 2009 – Essex Rowing Club, Inc. travelled to Saratoga Springs, NY this weekend to compete against some of the region’s best crews. Racing this weekend for Essex were the Boys’ Varsity 8+, Girls’ Varsity 8+ and Girls’ Novice 8+.

The Girls’ Novice 8+ race was a heats-only format with medals being awarded to the three fastest times out of the three heats. The Essex boat crossed the line in a time of 6:07:26 placing third in their heat and third out of the 15 Girls’ Novice Eights. They were just over one second behind the second place crew of Mount St. Joseph’s Academy and almost 27 seconds ahead of the next fastest boat in their heat.

The Varsity races followed a heats and finals format. The Boys’ Varsity 8+ finished third in their heat and advanced to the Grand, or top-level, final. The Girls’ Varsity 8+ also finished third in their heat qualifying for the Petite, or second-level, final.

In the afternoon finals, the Boys’ Varsity 8+ finished in the medals and took home the bronze. The Essex boys raced the course in a time of 5:06:86. They were just over one second behind the second place Shaker Crew and more than three seconds ahead of the fourth place Lowell High School Crew from Lowell, MA. In the end, the Boys beat out ten crews for their third place victory.

The Girls’ Varsity 8+ finished fourth in the Petite Final with a time of 5:57:00. They were more than 2 seconds ahead of fifth place Fayetteville Manlius Crew. The Girls beat out five of the 15 Girls’ Varsity 8+ Crews.
