Essex Rowers Open Season with Three Riveting Races

ESSEX NOVICE GIRLS HIGHLIGHT MORNING RACES WITH A BIG WIN

Methuen, MA – April 18, 2009 – Essex Rowing Club, Inc. opened its high school racing season today against crews from Wayland-Weston and Bromfield High Schools. The days events demonstrated where each of Essex' crews stand at this point in the season. The Essex Girls’ Varsity 8+ placed second out of four boats while the Essex Boys’ Varsity 8+ placed third out of four boats. In the last race of the day the Essex Girls’ Novice 8+ placed first out of four boats.

In the Girls’ Varsity 8+ race, Wayland-Weston led from the start and maintained their lead through the course of the 1500 meter race crossing the finish line in a time of 5:17.20. Bromfield proved to be an arduous match for the Essex Varsity with the Essex crew crossing the finish line only 1.50 seconds ahead. Essex’ final time was 5:23.32 while Bromfield’s was 5:24.82. Wayland-Weston’s Second Varsity 8+ also raced with the Essex Varsity and finished fourth in a time of 6:11.97.

The Boys’ Varsity 8+ race proved a slightly tighter field with all four boats covering the 1500 meter course less than 5 minutes. Wayland-Weston again led from the start finishing in 4:35.21. Bromfield was right behind Wayland-Weston finishing in a time of 4:36.14. Essex finished third in a time of 4:41.82. The Wayland-Weston Second Varsity 8+ finished fourth in a time of 4:57.65.

The final race of the day proved to be the most exciting for the Essex Rowers. The Essex Novice Girls were more than 30 seconds ahead of the second place crew when they crossed the finish line in a time of 5:31.85. The Essex Crew was leading the pack after the first 10 strokes of the race and never lost the lead. The Bromfield 8+ crossed the line second in a time of 6:02.98. Wayland-Weston’s First and Second Novice Eights crossed the line third and fourth respectively with times of 6:08.14 and 6:44.85

Essex Rowers are looking forward to the rest of their seasons and to the North-East / Mid-Atlantic Championships where they will culminate the season on May 16th and 17th.
