Essex Women Victorious in Boston at Cromwell Cup

Methuen, MA – July 14, 2008 – Three crews traveled to Boston this weekend to compete in the Cromwell Cup, hosted by Riverside Boat Club. Highlighting the day was a clear water victory in the Masters Women’s Eight, improving their record for the season to 26:7. Essex coaches Travis Gardner and Tim Cotreau also competed in the Men’s Open Single Dash and Men’s Open Single respectively.

Heats for each event started out the day with temperatures in the mid-70s and a steady headwind of 8-10 mph. The first race for Essex was the Men’s Open Single Dash, where Travis Gardner took first of two in his heat with a time of 1:47.5 to advance to the afternoon final. Shortly thereafter, the Masters Women also won their heat, cruising over the line easily with a 20 second margin on second place Northampton while also posting the fastest time of the event’s four morning heats, 3:57.21.

By early afternoon the winds had increased significantly, blowing steady at 15-20 mph with gusts in the high 20s. While occasional whitecaps could be seen on the course, the water remained rowable and Tim Cotreau was the first from Essex to test the extreme conditions in his heat for the Open Single. Despite holding a close margin through the first two thirds of the race Tim was unable to hold off a strong finish by the entry from Stonington Rowing Club who took the win and advanced to the final.

Travis Gardner raced next in his final for the 500m Dash. All three competitors got of the line slowly in the blistering wind and as they moved through the first 100m each sat within a length of the others, Gardner in third with Easy Eagle BC half a length up in second and Stonington RC a length ahead in first. Through the next 250m Easy Eagle drifted back but the margin between Gardner and Macris of Stonington remained at a length with the advantage to Macris. As the crews entered the final stretch the winds settled briefly allowing for a strong surge to the line, but the line closed too quickly for Gardner as Macris held his advantage to finish a deck ahead with a time of 2:05.06, .49 seconds ahead of Gardner.

The final for the Women’s Masters Eight followed shortly thereafter. The women felt confident coming into the weekend after significant speed was gained in practice the week prior. Numerous adjustments were made to their boat’s rig to maximize the crews power output and that optimization was clear in their performance in the final. Despite catching a crab over the initial stretch of the course, the women instantly recovered and held close contact with Riverfront Recapture, Inc. as each fought for the advantage with the crew from New Haven Rowing Club not far behind. No more than a handful of seats separated the top crews through the second bridge but as they moved into the final 400m, Riverfront Recapture was unable to match Essex’ speed as the women moved out to their final winning margin of 4.94 seconds ahead of Riverfront’s 4:02.84. New Haven followed with a time of 4:05.92 and Narragansett Boat Club trailed in fourth with a time of 4:26.88.

This weekend marks the last race in eights for the Essex women this season as they move into a Four with coxswain for the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta on August 10th. The ladies will race a tune-up in the newly minted four two weeks from now at the Sweeps and Sculls Regatta hosted by Narragansett Boat Club in Providence, Rhode Island.
