Masters Women's Rowing Builds Record to 7:1 in Philadelphia

Methuen, MA – June 16, 2008 – Essex Rowing Club, Inc.’s Masters Women’s Eight continued their strong season this weekend as they traveled to Philadelphia to compete in the Schuylkill Navy Regatta. The women finished second in a field of six, about a length and a half behind Baltimore Rowing Club and with clear water on third place Three Rivers Rowing Association.

The women were in the first of two flights for their event. Their flight was composed entirely of C level age group crews (average age 43-49) and therefore no handicaps were recognized. Essex’ final time was 4;05.78, 7.88 seconds behind Baltimore and 6 seconds ahead of third place Three Rivers. Carnegie Lake Rowing Association A and B crews placed forth and fifth respectively, with times of 4:12.32 and 4:26.29. Rocket City Rowing Club finished in 4:33.22.

The 1000 meter race was run into a slight headwind with temperatures in the low 90s and clear skies throughout the day. The start was called without much delay and Essex moved out quickly with the rest of the competition, settling into pace after the first 150 meters in a tight contest for first with Baltimore and Carnegie. Essex sat in third for much of the first half of the race before inching into second. No more than 4 seats separated the top three crews for the first 550 meters before they slowly started separating into their final margins over the line.

“We clearly fought hard for our second place finish, and we are proud that we rowed a clean, strong race,” commented 5 seat Marianne Merritt when asked about the piece. “We now have some clear goals for focusing our training going into the next round of competitions, and we have our sights set on improving as we move forward.”

“This was a very different experience for the women after cruising to an easy win last week,” said Coach Travis Gardner about the race. “They had to fight hard to maintain their position in the early part of the race against some fast starting crews. The effort took a heavy toll in the second half but they maintained their composure nonetheless and rowed cleanly through to the finish. If we can relax our start a bit without losing too much speed, I think that will set us up well for a much stronger last 600m and clear improvement in line to line performance.”

The crew’s will race next at the Lawrence Celebration Regatta on June 28, which is contested on Essex’ home water, the Merrimack River, just 2 miles downstream from Essex Rowing’s docks. This past weekend’s performance raises the women’s record for the season to 7:1. At least three events remain to be contested before ending the season on August 10 in St. Catherines, Ontario with the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta.
