Masters Women's Eight Takes First in Season Opener

Methuen, MA – June 8, 2008 – Essex Rowing Club, Inc.’s Masters Women’s Eight traveled to Shelton, CT yesterday to race in the Derby Sweeps and Sculls Regatta. The women won their flight by clear water in the 1000m race, clocking a 3:43.16 to finish over seven seconds ahead of second place Saugatuck Rowing Association.

This was the women’s first race of the summer competitive season and their first race since competing indoors at the C.R.A.S.H.-B Sprints in February. The women were in the second of three flights for their event, each with four boats. Flights were determined by grouping crews of similar average age and handicap. Essex’ final, adjusted time was 3:38.06, 4.52 seconds ahead of Saugatuck and 6.45 ahead of third place Norwalk River Rowing Association. Farmington Valley Rowing Association placed forth with an adjusted time of 3:57.25.

The race was slow to begin as crews struggled to achieve alignment for the floating start. Once the starting command was given however, the Essex women were quick to establish a lead and 20 strokes in had an eight seat advantage on their closest competition. The women continued to push for the remainder of the distance and finished with length open water lead.

“Everyone was happy to get in a solid piece today and come out on top [of the competition],” said Coach Travis Gardner following the race. “We knew the boat had been moving well at practice but didn’t really have any competitive gauge to see where that placed us against the other crews in the region. Our goal today was to set a benchmark and identify key areas we need to work on, and we did that. It was great to win of course but there’s a lot more speed to pull out of this crew before Henley. The women know that and we’re all excited to get back to work on Monday.”

The women will travel to Philadelphia next weekend for the Schuylkill Navy Regatta.
