Local Girls and Boys Place 2nd and 3rd at Regional Rowing Championship

Methuen, MA – May 22, 2007 – Essex Rowing Club, Inc., a new community rowing program in its first competitive season, placed both is girls and boys teams in the top three of the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic (NEMA) Junior Regional Championship Regatta this past Sunday in Worchester, MA. The girls placed 2nd of 17 crews in the novice eight event and the boys placed 3rd of 19 crews, also in the novice eight event. The novice category is a division for athletes in their first year of the sport. NEMA is the highest level of competition available for first year rowers in the region.

To reach the finals, both crews had to place in the top two of six boats in morning qualifying heats. The girls and boys both placed second with the boys coming out on top of a tight three boat struggle for second against crews from South Jersey and Hanover. The girls recovered from a slow start in which they were sitting last at 300 meters into the 2000 meter course but powered their way back to second by the finish, 4.5 seconds ahead of third place Mercer of New Jersey.

Afternoon finals were marked with a building tailwind making the water quite a bit rougher than the glassy conditions of the heats. Despite another slow start from the girls and struggles with the rough water, Essex finished second behind Hanover and 1.5 seconds ahead of Community Rowing, Inc. of Boston. Fourth place Wayland-Weston trailed by another 9 seconds. In the boys race, an aggressive sprint to the line let them nip Mercer by .3 seconds for 3rd place and the bronze medal. Community Rowing, Inc. and Norwalk placed 1st and 2nd respectively.

“The most thrilling part for me is that both the [girls and boys] squads did so well,” said Head Coach Travis Gardner. “They beat a lot of fast boats to get where they got today. This will help create a culture of success that will prove invaluable for future generations of Essex Rowing’s athletes. And for that to have happened so early in the organization’s history is a remarkable achievement for everyone involved.”

On Sunday, May 27th Essex Rowing will enter two boats in the Massachusetts Public Schools Rowing Association Championship in Lowell, MA – a girls novice eight and boys novice four, both representing Andover High School. “Essex Rowing is a non-scholastic entity and our teams are generally made up from athletes representing many different school,” explains Coach Gardner. “However the MPSRA is a scholastic event, so we’ll rearrange our normal lineups for a week to ensure all athletes in any given crew are from the same school, in this case Andover High. Next year we hope to have enough athletes to race crews from several local high schools, such as Methuen High, Mascnonomet Regional, North Andover, etc.”

The following week Essex Rowing will end its spring season hosting Newman Academy of Boston. The athletes will have one month off before resuming training in preparation for their next competitive season in the fall.

Introductory programs are also available through Essex Rowing this summer and are open to both middle and high school aged youth as well as adults of all ages. Two and three day per week options are available, starting at 4 pm for the youth and 6 pm for the adults. Programs begin July 5th with a registration deadline of June 5th.
