Essex operates separate middle school sessions to accomodate the needs of our younger athletes who are smaller (less than 5'3") and have a shorter attention span than their older, high school teammates. The rosters for these sessions are kept smaller to ensure a lower athlete:coach ratio, are shorter in duration, and meet 2 days/week rather than 3-6 days/week. If you believe your athlete would be better suited by participating in a high school program you should consult with the appropriate Senior Coach (Mike for boys and Travis for girls) to determine if they may do so.
NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY
Athletes will be run through an extensive technical introduction to the sport first using indoor rowing machines, indoor rowing tanks (when available), and on the water rowing. As skill develops, workouts will take on a progressively more intensive physical component but will always emphasize general endurance. Long-term focus will lay upon providing the physical and technical foundation required to successfully and confidently pursue competitive rowing at the high school level.
Coxswains will follow a similar track as the rowers while also getting some exposure to the basic leadership skills required of that role. After a short period, coxswains will be expected to begin assuming general responsibility for coordinating simple practice components under the supervision of their coach.

FOR ATHLETES THAT HAVE COMPLETED INTRODUCTORY ROWING
The novice program takes athletes through a patient and focused development of the fundamentals of rowing technique. Athletes are broken into smaller groups at practice based on maturity (physical and mental) as well as skill level. Please note that this is not a competitive program. Once athletes reach the appropriate level they will be invited to join the Junior (high school) novice program, where comeptitive opportunities will become available once the athletes have reached the appropriate stage in their development.
