The introductory session will provide a broad introduction to the rowing stroke and begin to develop the basic leadership skills required of the coxswain. After a short period, coxswains will be expected to begin assuming general responsibility for coordinating simple practice components under the supervision of their coach. Responsbilities and breadth of the coxswains role will increase significantly as the athletes move to the water in the spring. At this time coxswains will be expected to take an active and extensive role in the execution of practice plans and in development and implementation of race strategy.

The winter is an invaluable time for rowers to fine tune general skills and focus on developing a strong physical foundation for future competition (including indoor races such as Boston's own C.R.A.S.H.-B Sprints). For novice athletes in particular, it affords them with the opportunity to get a head start in skill development leading into the spring. Each athlete's training will also be characterized by a strong emphasis on individual skill and long-term physical development focusing on select championship (spring) races.
