NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY
Athletes will be taken through a one-week introduction to the sport using a combination of indoor rowing machines, tanks, and (weather permitting) on the water rowing. Tuition for the introductory sessions will be credited towards that of the spring novice option 1 or 2 season for athletes that continue in the novice program.

Coxswains taking the introductory session will attend the varsity practices for one week to learn the basics of steering, directing boat movement on and off the dock, implementing practice plans. provide a broad introduction to the rowing stroke and begin to develop the basic leadership skills required of the coxswain. Following the introductory session, coxswains will be expected to begin assuming general responsibility for coordinating simple practice components under the supervision of their coach. Responsbilities and breadth of the coxswains role will increase significantly as the athletes move to the water in the spring. At this time coxswains will be expected to take an active and extensive role in the execution of practice plans and in development and implementation of race strategy. There are no set dates for this session, coxswains may take the introductory course at any time or may join a novice session without completing an introductory week first.

The novice program is for athletes that are within their first year of rowing or coxing. This program will use an intensive and methodical approach to technical and physical development of athletes so that they may learn to move a rowing shell quickly and effectively. As athletes reach the appropriate skill level, they will begin to compete against novice atheltes from other local and regional teams in a competitive season culminating in a northeast regional championship which includes teams from throughout CT, MA, and NH.
