The spring serves as the primary competitive season for youth (a.k.a. junior) athletes, beginning with numerous regular season regattas against local teams and culminating in championship events at the state, regional, and national levels for those crews that would qualify. Training is focused on harnessing the aerobic foundation and technical skills developed in the preceding months to produce the speed and anaerobic capacity necessary to tap each athletes full potential in the competitive arena.

The competitive season brings with it increasing demands on the team’s coxswains. Practices are often complex and demand precise execution and it is the responsibility of each coxswain to communicate efficiently and effectively with their coach and other coxswains to ensure their crews are where they need to be, when they need to be there, and doing what they need to be doing. This is also a time when steering skills are under heavy scrutiny as a straight course is both shorter and faster and poor steering can mean the difference between victory and defeat. Finally, coxswains are charged with execution of strategy and coordination of their crews in competition, when the coach is left on the shore as just another spectator.
